Hadrian's Wall
A World Heritage Site since 1987, Hadrian’s Wall is an astounding feat of engineering that is best known for being Britain’s most impressive and most important Roman monument. You can hike along the wall, and along the 73 miles of the wall there are plenty of spots for anyone from casual ramblers to serious hikers.
Fancy a bonus challenge? Head to Sycamore Gap to see the beautiful spot where ‘the most photographed tree in the country’ sits in a dramatic dip in the landscape with magnificent views – as featured in the blockbuster film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner!
Hadrian’s Wall is a 20 minute drive from Slaley Hall, beginning in nearby Corbridge, or Sycamore Gap is around 40 minutes drive away.
Kielder Water & Forest Park
England’s largest forest, and home to Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake, Kielder has everything from long walks to biking trails. With an exciting forest park featuring minigolf, archery, boat trips, birds of prey and more, the only issue is fitting everything in!
For an unforgettable experience, stay until sundown and experience Europe’s second largest dark sky – Kielder is a protected dark sky reserve, with some of the least light polluted skies in the country. Even if you’re not at Kielder Observatory, on a very lucky night you could even see the Northern Lights!

Northumberland Coast
Get sand in your shoes and feel the wind in your hair – Northumberland’s coastline is simply spectacular. Choose from over 30 miles of beaches - no matter what your preference, there’s a beach for you. Go rock pooling in Dunstanburgh, relax on the soft white dunes at Warkworth, or give your favourite four-legged friend a workout at Alnmouth beach.
The Northumberland coastline is around an hour from Slaley Hall by car along the A1.
St. Mary's Lighthouse
Accessible via a causeway that is covered by the tides twice a day, St Mary’s Lighthouse is surrounded by a fantastic nature reserve. Take the kids rockpooling, go beachcombing on the shore, or break out the binoculars to see the cornucopia of wild seabirds you can spot on the island.
Discover the history of the lighthouse and more about the wildlife in the mini museum, and if you’re feeling up to the climb, ascend the 137 steps for wonderful views of the North East Coast.
St. Mary’s Island is an hour away from Slaley Hall by car
Hareshaw Linn
A truly spectacular sight, this is a magical walk through beautiful forest and woodland to a natural waterfall surrounded by greenery. The area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and is home to hundreds of species of ferns and lichen.
The walk lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours, and is fairly easy for any capable walkers – and dogs are welcome too!
Hareshaw Linn is in Bellingham, 45 minutes away from Slaley Hall by car.
