Laughter and memories you'll always treasure

This world-famous site is your chance to walk through history – literally. Beamish is an open-air museum, and a living piece of history. This unique historical site tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s & 1940s, with authentic homes, technology, fashions and more!

Beamish is a living, working museum, set in 300 acres of idyllic Durham countryside. With actors, workers, and conservationists in full costume, you can explore an authentic town, pit village, farm, schoolroom and more.

Children will relish the change to buy penny sweets at the old sweet shop, meet adorable pit ponies, and try traditional coal-fired fish and chips. With an old-fashioned funfair and rides finishing off the day, you’ll be sad to go back to the present!

Take a boat ride from Seahouses

A traditional seaside resort town, Seahouses is still a working fishing port. With arcades, shops, and cafes, there’s something for everyone in this bustling town – but for the most memorable way to spend a day, head down to the harbour and book passage on one of the boat trips going out to the Farne Islands.

Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of seabirds like guillemots and kittwakes, and you’re sure to see plenty of friendly puffins flapping across the ocean. You can choose to land on the islands during non-nesting seasons, and see hundreds of seabirds as you pick across the rocky island.

Seahouses is around an hour and a half away from Slaley Hall

Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens

This lovely 17th century country mansion houses beautiful grounds and walled gardens – but is also home to a zoo, with over three hundred species of animals including lemurs, meerkats, wallabies and more! Stroll around the gardens or explore the forest trails before you pop in to see the animals – there really is something for all of the family.

There’s a full programme of kids’ activities, and you can meet the keepers and learn about the creatures, their habits and habitats. With picnic areas and a tea room and gift shop, it’s a great day out for all the family.
